Medical education in India remains a top choice for aspiring doctors, not only for Indian residents but also for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs). With a limited number of seats and rising competition, many students consider the NRI Sponsored Quota as a viable route for MBBS admission in India.
If you're planning to apply under the NRI-sponsored category for the MBBS session 2025, here's everything you need to know, including eligibility, process, and important guidelines.
The NRI Sponsored Quota is a reserved category in various private medical colleges and deemed universities in India, allowing students sponsored by an NRI relative to secure MBBS admission. This quota is primarily designed to benefit Indian-origin students living abroad or students sponsored by NRIs.
To be eligible under the NRI Sponsored category, a candidate must:
Be an Indian citizen, NRI, OCI, or PIO.
Qualify for NEET-UG 2025 (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test).
Be sponsored by an NRI (can be a parent, sibling, uncle, aunt, or grandparent).
Provide valid proof of sponsorship (affidavit, passport of sponsor, relationship proof, etc.).
Fulfill the minimum academic qualifications: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotech, and English with minimum marks as per NMC norms.
Some of the major institutions and deemed universities offering NRI-sponsored seats include:
Manipal Academy of Higher Education
DY Patil Medical College (Pune, Navi Mumbai)
Kasturba Medical College (Manipal and Mangalore)
SRM Medical College
Bharati Vidyapeeth (Pune, Sangli)
Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (Kochi)
JSS Medical College (Mysuru)
Note: Government medical colleges also offer NRI quota seats, but mostly to genuine NRIs, not NRI-sponsored students. Policies differ from state to state.
All candidates (including NRI sponsored) must qualify NEET-UG 2025.
Registration for NEET usually begins in February, with the exam held in May.
For Deemed Universities, register under MCC (Medical Counseling Committee) www.mcc.nic.in.
For state private colleges, register with respective state counseling authorities.
During choice filling, opt for NRI/NRI Sponsored quota seats.
Submit the required documents (see below) to support your sponsorship claim.
Upload or present the following:
NEET Scorecard
10th & 12th Marksheets
NRI Sponsorship Affidavit
Relationship Proof (Birth Certificate, etc.)
Sponsor’s Passport & Visa
Candidate’s Passport (if available)
Embassy Certificate (in some cases)
Seats are allotted based on NEET rank and availability of NRI quota seats.
Once allotted, pay the required tuition fee in USD or INR equivalent and report to the college.
NRI quota fees range between USD $20,000 – $50,000 per year, depending on the institution.
Some colleges may accept fees in INR equivalent based on RBI conversion rates.
Additional hostel, mess, and caution deposit charges are applicable.
